Maxifed is classified as an expectorant. As such, it relieves the congestion in the throat in order to make it easier to expel from the body by coughing. It also acts as a decongestant by causing dilated blood vessels in the nasal passages to shrink. According to Drugs.com, the medication also "...works in the brain to help decrease the cough reflex."

Common side effects that may arise as a result of use include nausea, upset stomach, diarrhea, dizziness, drowsiness, headache, excitability, mild insomnia and irritability. Though common, the preceding side effects may become a cause for concern if they persist or worsen. In such an event, contact your doctor immediately.

According to Drugs.com, a variety of severe side effects may occur as a result of using Maxifed including: "difficulty urinating; fast, slow, or irregular heartbeat; fever; hallucinations; mental or mood changes (eg, anxiety, nervousness); paleness; seizures; severe or persistent dizziness, lightheadedness, or headache; and tremor." Severe allergic reaction may also occur because of use of this product. Seek immediate medical attention if any of these side effects arise.

Always use Maxifed as directed on the label. Never extend dose beyond symptoms or increase the dose amount. If you are using Maxifed as an extended-release tablet, be sure to swallow whole as chewing the tablet can trigger an inappropriate release of the drug. Drugs.com reports that drinking extra fluids while taking Maxifed can help to loosen congestion and prevent the occurrence of certain side effects. Store at room temperature away from heat and moisture.

Never use Maxifed if your are not experiencing congestion or cough as a result of the common cold. Avoid drinking alcohol while taking this medicine. Do not take in conjunction with any other over-the-counter medicines. Do not use in children under the age of 6.
