Gluten Weight Loss

Originally gluten-free diets were only for those people with celiac disease. In recent years, many people have been experimenting with a gluten-free lifestyle, and many are finding that the results are improving many aspects of their lives. Some proponents claim that a gluten-free diet will lead to rapid weight loss.

  1. Types

    • Gluten is a protein found in wheat, rye and barley. Gluten is present in bread, pasta, crackers and a host of other products. Nearly every convenience food on the market contains gluten. For those people with an intolerance to gluten, even a little bit can cause health problems including rashes, digestive problems and bloating. Gluten intolerance also prevents the body from absorbing the nutrients in many foods, which can cause a multitude of health problems. Because many people with gluten intolerance are self-diagnosed, the number is difficult to determine. A study by the Gluten Intolerance Group in Utah estimates that 1 in 133 people are gluten-intolerant.

    Significance

    • Celiac patients have an inability to absorb nutrients. As a result, many of these patients are underweight. However, there has been increased discussion recently about celiac patients that are overweight. Many of these patients are finding that eliminating gluten from their diet is helping them to shed pounds. It is thought that because these patients are unable to absorb nutrients, their bodies are clinging to fat stores as a defensive measure. More studies need to be conducted to explore these findings.

    Misconceptions

    • Not all people who consider themselves gluten-intolerant have been diagnosed by a doctor. There are many people who are not diagnosed with celiac disease, but find that eliminating gluten from their diets simply make them feel better. These people choose to avoid gluten and report improved digestion, reduced bloating and fewer symptoms of other problems, such as irritable bowel syndrome. Many also experience weight loss.

    Theories/Speculation

    • The reports of weight loss after eliminating gluten have not been fully researched. There are many theories about the science behind the weight loss.

Weight loss could be a result of simply reducing calorie intake. Weight loss may vary based on what a person uses as a substitute for gluten. Nutritionists do not endorse the elimination of gluten, but also do not see any harmful effects.

Elimination of gluten from the diet can also improve digestive health. The weight loss experienced by those who are gluten free could be the result of a cleaner colon.

The weight loss could also be explained by increased protein consumption. Protein in the body holds less water. Eating increased protein and fewer carbohydrates can help the body to get rid of water and, therefore, reduce the number on the scale.

    Warning

    • The U.S. Food and Drug Administration recommends at least three servings of whole grains daily. Those looking to follow a gluten-free lifestyle should find a substitute for wheat, rye and barley to achieve this minimum daily requirement.
