Perricone & Weight Loss
The Perricone diet claims not to focus on weight loss but instead focuses on improving your metabolism, lifting your mood and improving your skin, bone density and preventing disease. And yes, all this could possibly result in weight loss. Dr. Nicholas Perricone assets that certain foods can cause skin inflammation, wrinkles and dietary problems in the body. The following tips are part of the Perricone diet regimen.
-
Protein
-
Fish is probably the single most important element in the Perricone diet as it supplies the body with needed omega-3 fatty acids, found in fish oils. Perricone is a dermatologist, and his products were originally meant to help people combat wrinkles, acne and other skin ailments. However, he found that his patients were also losing weight while following the supplemental plan he offered, so he began offering a diet regimen whose main protein components are fish and beans such as legumes and chickpeas. Lean meats such as chicken or turkey breast are also options.
Carbs
-
Under Perricone's plan, moderate to low carbohydrate consumption is necessary. And certain carbs, such as bread, pasta and sweets are rarely, if ever, allowed. Anything processed or containing high amounts of sugar are forbidden. Whole wheat products containing lots of fiber, such as barley and wheat germ, are allowed in moderation.
-
Fruit, Nuts and Veg
-
Vegetables such as artichokes, avocados, broccoli, brussel sprouts and peppers are included in the Perricone diet plan. Fruits such as berries, grapefruit and melon are often paired with oatmeal in the morning. Expect more vegetables in the diet than fruit, however, because of fruit's high sugar content. Almonds are also high on the snack priority list.
Absolute Don'ts and Almost Nevers
-
There are quite a few absolute don'ts in the Perricone diet that could make it hard for many people to stick to. Red meat is not allowed at all, nor is coffee, which can cause problems for early risers who rely on the caffeinated drink for that extra boost before the commute to work. But possibly the hardest thing to avoid in the Perricone diet are milk and dairy, which show up in many products. Alcohol, in the form of red wine, is allowed, but rarely.
Criticism
-
Nutritionists argue that Perricone's suggested two helpings of fish a day can even be too much for fish lovers and question his recommendations as too much of anything can be dangerous. Also, the nonflexible plan requires that you cook, package and pack your food when going to work, and if you have a large family who you wish to include in the diet plan, this can prove challenging and time consuming. The recipes in the Perricone diet are complicated, and users have complained they aren't left feeling satisfied with the portions after all their hard work. Also, cutting out things like milk and dairy from your diet has its fair share of criticism, since these foods produce natural calcium your body needs to prevent diseases such as osteoporosis.
