Drug addiction is a disease that has substantial effects on behavior and the functions of the brain. Under the influence of illegal drugs, people do things that they would not normally do. This leads to violent crimes, child neglect, child endangerment, irrational thinking and unusual behavior. According to the Bureau of Justice Statistics, The Uniform Crime Reporting Program (UCR) of the Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) reported that in 2007, 3.9 percent of the 14,831 homicides in which circumstances were known were narcotics related.
