- The prostate, a small walnut-sized gland that is part of the male reproduction process, is prone to enlargement. The first prostatic growth period occurs during puberty. The male adolescent produces hormones that encourage the prostate to grow. Although the prostatic growth stops at about age 20, it begins to grow again around age 40 and as you begin to age. An enlarged prostate can also be caused by prostatitis (a prostate infection) or prostatic cancer.
- One of the easiest ways to prevent prostate cancer is to practice good hygiene. Bacteria introduced into the urinary system through the urethra can cause urinary tract infections, which can lead to prostatitis. Start by keeping your genitals clean and dry. Wash your genitals daily and after sexual intercourse, using a mild soap and warm water. Change your underwear frequently and avoid wiping back to front after bowel movements. These practices will prevent bacteria such as E. coli from being spread from your anal area to the urethra, causing prostatitis and thus an enlarged prostate.
- Another easy way to prevent an enlarged prostate is to practice safe sex. The prostate has a close proximity and working relationship with the urethra, the tube through which urine and semen are expressed from the male body. Anything that affects the urethra generally affects the prostate as well. The urethra's opening is at the tip of the penis. Unsafe sex can lead to sexually transmitted diseases or urinary system infections. These conditions can put you at risk for developing prostate infections, which can cause an enlarged prostate. Using condoms can protect the urethra from bacteria and viruses, thus preventing an enlarged prostate.
- Prostate cancer is another leading cause of an enlarged prostate. Although we do not know the specific causes of prostate cancer, research has shown that your chances of contracting prostatic cancer can be linked to diet. A diet that is high in fat and red meat can increase your risk of this type of cancer. To avoid an enlarged prostate caused by prostatic cancer, your diet should be high in proteins from eggs, soy and fish. Vegetables, chicken and low-fat dairy are also smart choices for enlarged prostate prevention.
- Unfortunately, not all factors that increase your risk of prostate enlargement can be prevented. However, recognizing these factors and having regular prostate exams can increase your chances of early diagnosis and treatment. Men over the age of 55 and African American men are more likely to develop an enlarged prostate. If prostatic cancer runs in your family, you are also at risk. If you fit in any of these groups, you should talk to your health care provider for suggestions on how to minimize your prostatic enlargement risks.
