Nakshatra Matchmaking
In India, rituals, ceremonies, marriage and festivals are planned according to the astrological positions of the planets. Nakshatra (planets) matchmaking is determined by the celestial positions of the bride and the groom. According to Hindus, planets determine the association and bond between the husband and wife.

Purpose of Matchmaking
-
The pre-marriage matchmaking would judge whether the planetary positions of the bride and groom are favorable. The matchmaking would determine whether the bride and groom are compatible and whether they will have a long, peaceful marriage. Any event in the celestial position of either the bride or groom, which might be harmful to each other, is detected. In certain cases, marriages are sometimes rejected on the basis of accidents that might appear in horoscopes.
Methods of Matchmaking
-
Astrological calculation determines whether the prospective bride or groom is a Manglik. A manglik bride or groom brings disaster and incompatibility to marriage. The Guna of the prospective bride and groom are also matched, calculated on a score of 18 and above, which is essential for lifelong compatibility.

Manglik Bride or Groom?
-
The prospective bride or groom could be a Lagna (rising sign) Manglik or a Chandra Manglik. When Mars is in the first, fourth, seventh, eighth or 12th houses from the Lagna, it is Lagna Manglik. When Mars is placed in the first, fourth, seventh, eighth or 12th houses from the moon, it is Chandra Manglik.
Guna Matching
-
Gunas are eight qualities that are found in horoscopes that should be matched for ideal marriage. They are Varna, Vashya, Tara, Yoni, Graha Maitri, Gana Kuta, Bha Kuta and Nadi Dosha. According to Sunil Sharma, director of Astro Ent, "All of these eight astrological factors have been assigned scores: Varna is 1, Vashya is 2, Tara is 3, Yoni is 4, Graha Maitri is 5, Gana Kuta is 6, Bha Kuta is 7, Nadi Dosha is 8. These total up to 1+2+3+4+5+6+7+8=36 Gunas. Out of these, the gunas that match positively are added to the score and the points for any doshas (blemishes) are deducted."
Nakshatra Matchmaking
-
Special attention is given to the position of planets in the house of marriage (seventh house). The house of marriage must have favorable planetary influences and the blessings of the Lord before such a marriage can bring bliss and happiness. The quotient of anger in both the prospective bride and groom is also calculated on the basis of astrological influence. If they both have high temper, then the marriage can lead to quarrels and conflicts. Again if they share the same Lagna (rising sign), one might prosper and the other might lag. A glossary of such factors is taken into account for a successful Nakshatra matchmaking.
Problems of Matchmaking
-
Nakshatra matchmaking might seem irrelevant today and it often contributes to mismatched marriages. However, it is still the basic foundation of Hindu marriages. Often, improper calculations can lead to divorce, accident, ill health, death, financial crisis and misfortune.
