How Long Is Active Duty Navy Enlistment?

Upon enlisting in the Navy, a naval seaman recognizes that after completion of boot camp, his or her active duty enlistment will extend for a period of no less than two years on up to even six years. At the end of the enlistment period, if the seaman is still eligible for active duty, the seaman may reenlist. A seaman should be informed of how long his active duty enlistment will last or be able to speak to someone who can answer his question.

  1. Definition

    • Active duty is a phrase that refers to the service of military personnel within their military branch full-time. Active duty is the opposite of reserve duty, which is often only conducted on weekends and within the military personnel's own country. Being enlisted in active duty means that military personnel can be called up at any moment to contribute to active combat.

    Boot Camp

    • Active duty enlistment begins with the eight weeks of boot camp, meant to both physically and mentally train candidates for active duty and to transform them from civilians to sailors or soldiers. Each week of boot camp is intended to serve its own purpose in shaping campers into military personnel. Graduation from boot camp occurs at the end of the eighth week of camp, thus distinguishing that a camper has become a soldier or sailor and is ready to serve in active duty upon graduation.

    Considerations

    • Navy seamen do not always go straight to active duty once they leave boot camp. Whether or not they go immediately to active duty often depends on what the seamen is specializing in. If a specialized skill is needed, the officer will be sent to what is known as "A" School. "A" School is a term used to described specialized training that Navy personnel can receive.

    Assignment

    • During assignment, a sailor's detailer will work with him or her to determine the best assignment for the sailor based on the sailor's desires in relation to the Navy's active duty needs. Assignment determination should begin nine months to one year before the sailor's scheduled transfer date. Following the determination, the sailor should obtain written transfer orders that should include information regarding the length of the sailor's active duty enlistment.

    Times of Active Duty

    • Married sailors or sailors with kids can choose to have their family moved to their active duty home base, making active duty seem less like a term of separation from loved ones and thus be more fulfilling. In addition to this option, sailors will also receive 30 days of leave time each year of their active duty. During this leave time the sailor will not be asked to report for duty unless a war breaks out.

    Reinlistment

    • Following the completion of an active duty enlistment, sailors may choose to reenlist if they meet all requirements for reenlistment, including health and age requirements. Reenlisting sailors are offered numerous bonuses and incentives, opportunities for further advancement in their skill field, college scholarships and sometimes retirement plans.
