Can You Take Advil With Celebrex?

Celebrex is a prescription medication available for the treatment of arthritis and fibromyalgia. Celebrex is classified as an nonsterioidal anti-inflammatory drug (NSAID) and received approval from the U.S. Food and Drug Administration in 1998. Because Celebrex is an NSAID, it causes a negative interaction with other NSAIDS, even in over-the-counter medications such as ibuprofen. Celebrex should not be taken while taking ibuprofen, including the drugs Advil or Motrin.

  1. Dosage

    • Taking Celebrex exactly as prescribed by your doctor will help reduce the risk of side effects or reactions to this medication. Follow the directions as they appear on your label. Because Celebrex is associated with upset stomach, taking your dose with 8 oz glass of milk will help reduce that uncomfortable side effect. Store Celebrex at room temperature to ensure effectiveness of this medication.

    Side Effects

    • Celebrex is associated with certain side effects that require immediate medical attention. If you experience chest pain, coughing up of blood, suddenly gain weight or have black or bloody bowel movements, you need to seek emergency care. Other side effects are not as serious and do not require emergency treatment, but any side effect should be reported to your doctor. Less severe side effects include skin rash, heartburn, indigestion, feeling dizzy or having an upset stomach.

    Interactions

    • Some medications may interfere with the effectiveness of Celebrex or cause side effects to be more severe. It is important that you avoid certain medications while continuing your treatment with Celebrex. Medications to avoid include over-the-counter medicines such as Advil, Aleve, Motrin or Naprosyn. Some prescription medicines should also be avoided and include Cataflam, Voltaren, Dolobid and Ansaid. The prescription medications Ponstel, Feldene and Mobic must also be avoided.

    Other Interactions

    • Some medical conditions may cause an interaction to occur if you are taking Celebrex. Do not take Celebrex without discussing your conditions with your doctor, especially if you have asthma, a history of kidney failure or heart complications. Do not take Celebrex without talking to your doctor if you have problems with your liver. Do not take Celebrex if you are pregnant or breastfeeding. Do not take Celebrex if you have hypertension (high blood pressure) without talking to your doctor first.

    Caution

    • With all NSAIDs, the chance of heart attack or stroke leading to death is increased. Never take Celebrex after a having a heart attack or a procedure involving surgery. Celebrex is sometimes associated with a serious skin condition that causes bleeding or ulcers. Be sure to talk with your physician about all of your medical history before taking Celebrex.
