Side Effects of MetroGel

MetroGel is a topical medication that is used to treat skin conditions such as rosacea. It is a form of metronidazole, and comes in both lotion and cream forms. Apart from skin conditions, it is also used for the treatment of various kinds of vaginal bacterial infections. The medication is an antibiotic, and works by preventing bacterial growth. There are some side effects that can occur with use of MetroGel.

  1. Cream Side Effects

    • There are several common and serious side effects of MetroGel cream. The common side effects are usually not considered serious, and tend to subside quickly. These side effects are mild scaling, burning, itching, stinging and dryness. Should these side effects persist or intensify, however, you should notify your doctor. The more serious side effects of the cream require emergency medical care, as they could be harmful. These include severe scaling, burning, itching, stinging and dryness, as well as numbness or tingling in the feet or hands, and allergic reactions (with symptoms such as chest tightness, problems with breathing, hives, itchiness, skin rash, and the tongue, lips, mouth, or face becoming swollen).

    Gel

    • MetroGel's gel form also has both common and severe side effects. The common side effects of the gel include minor irritation of the vagina, upset stomach, pelvic-area discomfort and headache. The severe side effects of the gel are burning, numbing or tingling of the legs, hands, arms, or feet; seizures; stomachache; vaginal discharge, itchiness or odor; extreme or lingering vaginal irritation; and allergic reactions (with symptoms such as trouble breathing, tightness in the chest, hives, skin rash and the tongue, lips, mouth or face swelling).

    Vaginal Gel

    • The gel medication that is used to treat vaginal bacterial infections also can lead to common or serious side effects. The common side effects of the vaginal gel are mild stinging, dryness, burning, scaling or itching. The potentially more harmful side effects of the vaginal gel are extreme irritation, burning, dryness, stinging, itching or scaling; numbness or tingling of the feet or hands; and allergic reaction (with symptoms such as chest tightness; swelling of the tongue, lips, mouth, or face; rash on the skin; itchiness; and hives).

    Caution

    • Before using MetroGel, it is necessary to make sure that your doctor is aware of your full medical history, as well as any medical conditions that you might presently have. This is particularly important for medical conditions such as blood cell diseases, such as low white blood cell counts and anemia. These disorders could call for not using MetroGel, or for dosage changes or specialized testing.

    Warnings

    • This topical medicine is only safe for use on the skin. It is very important to make sure that MetroGel does not get inside of the eyes. In case of the medicine getting inside of the eyes, it is vital to immediately rinse them out using cool water. Also, if you suspect that you might have used too much MetroGel, you need to seek emergency medical help to be on the safe side. However, MetroGel overdose usually is not considered to be life-threatening.
