Omnicef Side Effects in Infants

Omnicef (cephdinir) is a prescription antibiotic medication. It is commonly prescribed to infants to treat bacterial infections. Side effects of Omnicef are usually mild, but sometimes bothersome or serious side effects can occur.

  • Omnicef is used to treat bacterial infections. Specifically, it may be prescribed to treat ear infections, throat infections, tonsil infections, skin infections and pneumonia. Omnicef works by either killing infectious bacteria or by preventing the bacteria from growing anymore.

Time Frame

  • Omnicef is often prescribed for a time period of 10 days. A dose of the medication is typically given every 12 hours. The complete course of medication should be given even if symptoms subside.

Common Side Effects

  • Infants taking Omnicef may experience nausea, vomiting and mild diarrhea. Also, infants can develop a diaper rash while taking Omnicef. In some cases, the infant's stool may look reddish. Also, infants who have taken Omnicef on several different occasions may develop oral thrush.

Other possible side effects include headache, chills, urination pain, shortness of breath, increased bruising, swollen glands, stomach pain, appetite loss, red eyes, itchy skin and seizures.

Serious Side Effects

  • Contact your child's doctor if any serious side effects occur. Serious side effects may include bloody or watery diarrhea, fever, seizures or jaundice. Also, if the infant develops blisters or a severe rash, the child's doctor should be consulted.

Allergic Reaction

  • Some infants may be allergic to Omnicef. Those infants who are allergic to penicillin are often also allergic to Omnicef, but not always. Symptoms of an allergic reaction include difficulty breathing, facial swelling, tongue swelling and hives. If an allergic reaction occurs, emergency medical treatment is necessary.
