Carpal Tunnel Relief During Pregnancy
Carpal tunnel is a common condition of pregnancy and most commonly strikes pregnant women in the third trimester of pregnancy. Carpal tunnel causes burning, tingling and numbing sensations in the hands and fingers. According to Dr. Spock, there are several ways to relieve the painful and annoying symptoms associated with carpal tunnel.
-
Eliminate Repetitive Activities
-
Repetitive activities such as talking on the phone or typing on the computer can further aggravate carpal tunnel syndrome in pregnancy. By eliminating or reducing these activities, symptoms from the syndrome can be decreased. For instance, if the job requires talking on the phone for a large part of the day, consider investing in a headset or using the speakerphone feature. Making simple changes in repetitive activities can help with symptoms.
Use Proper Supports
-
Make sure that proper supports are used during repetitive activities. If symptoms are noticed while typing on the keyboard, ensure that the keyboard is ergonomic. The mouse pad and keyboard should include wrist supports. The desk chair should also be at the proper level so that the wrist is not bent from trying to reach the keyboard. If these options do not help, consider speech recognition software for typing activities.
-
Wear a Wrist Brace
-
The doctor may order a wrist brace to be worn around the clock. This brace will help to support the wrist and ensure it stays in the proper alignment throughout the day and night. Depending on when the symptoms are noticed most, the woman may need to only wear the wrist brace during those activities.
Take Medications
-
When symptoms are particularly bothersome and other remedies do not alleviate the pain and numbness involved, a doctor may prescribe medication or a vitamin supplement. Pain or anti-inflammatory medications may be used to alleviate the symptoms. Which medication can be prescribed may depend on how far along the pregnancy is as to not harm the fetus. Pregnant women should always check with the doctor before taking any prescription or over-the-counter medications. The vitamin B-6 may also help to alleviate the symptoms.
Considerations
-
Carpal tunnel syndrome that begins in pregnancy will typically resolve on its own after the delivery of the baby. As the fluid levels in the body return to normal, the pressure on the nerves in the wrist will be decreased. The decrease in pressure will gradually eliminate the symptoms in most women. If symptoms persist after the pregnancy, contact the doctor.
