Depression is a serious medical condition with the possibility of serious health complications, including substance abuse and heart disease. In fact, the World Health Organization reports that depression is the leading cause of disability of people ages 15 to 44 worldwide. If you suffer from depression, your doctor is likely to employ a number of treatments to help you, including prescription medications like citalopram. In South Africa, citalopram is available under the brand name Adco-Talomil or simply Talomil. Despite its effectiveness, Adco-Talomil is not for everyone as it presents several risks for side effects and complications in some patients.
Common Side Effects
Approximately 20 percent of Adco-Talomil users report nausea and dry mouth, making these the most common side effects of the drug. Insomnia, tremors, fatigue, sweating, diarrhea and indigestion are also common, occurring in at least 6 percent of users. Additionally, 6 percent of men who take Talomil experience difficulty ejaculating or a reduced volume of ejaculant. More than 3 percent of women who take Adco-Talomil experience anorexia, anxiety, vomiting, upper respiratory tract infections and nasal congestion.
Other Side Effects
Adco-Talomil also has the potential to cause a number of other troublesome or annoying, but not dangerous, side effects. Additional gastrointestinal and reproductive side effects are possible while taking the drug, including abdominal pain, flatulence, increased salivation, impotence and menstrual cramps or irregularity. Some patients experience neurological or sensory side effects from Adco-Talomil, such as agitation, a decreased interest in sex, dizziness, yawning, weakness, increased appetite, tingling in the extremities and changes in the taste of food. Other possible side effects of Adco-Talomil include itchy skin rash, joint and muscle pain, fever, sinus infections and coughing.
There are some medications that produce unwanted side effects when used in conjunction with Adco-Talomil. For example, the combination of Talomil and beta-blocking drugs like carvedilol frequently cause decreases in heart rate. MAOI inhibitors, pimozide, cimetizide increase serious side effets of Adco-Talomil. When taken with the migraine medication sumatriptan, Talomil has the potential to cause high blood pressure, changes in skin color, excessive sweating, weakness and lack of coordination. If taken with lithium, Adco-Talomil causes serotonin syndrome, a serious condition marked by twitching, high fever, seizures, irregular heart beat and even unconsciousness.
In addition to minor side effects and the risk of interactions, Adco-Talomil has the potential to cause serious medical complications. For example, some patients experience cardiovascular effects from the drug, including dangerous drops in blood pressure, racing heart beat and severe arrhythmias known as torsades de pointes. Talomil causes serious neurological effects in some patients, such as amnesia, severe aggression, delirium, involuntary movements of the eyes and increased suicidal thinking or behavior. Some patients develop liver failure, gastrointestinal bleeding or inflammation of the pancreas while taking Adco-Talomil.
Because Adco-Talomil infrequently causes miscarriages, doctors rarely prescribe the drops for pregnant women. Additionally, patients over the age of 65 are more prone to serious side effects from Talomil. When you stop taking Adco-Talomil, it is possible to experience symptoms of withdrawal, including lethargy, anxiety, a return of depression and headaches. If you have a history of kidney or liver disease or bipolar disorder, your doctor is not likely to prescribe Talomil due to its potential side effects.
