A storyboarder, also called a storyboard artist, is a visual artist working in entertainment, advertising and other visual media fields. She is responsible for drawing the scenes of a film or television production to provide a tangible example of a director's plan before filming. These drawings also afford the director the opportunity to eliminate unworkable ideas before production begins, saving both money and time.

Job Responsibilities

  • The first step in the storyboard process is meeting with the director, producer or production designer to discuss the visual goals of the production. Next, he illustrates various scenes, based upon the meeting instructions. These drawings are then reviewed by the production leader, who will request revisions or new storyboards or will approve the start of production. The storyboarder repeats this process for each scene of a shooting script.

Job Opportunities

  • Many storyboarders begin in a production or advertisement company. Academic institutions offering visual arts training typically have career services offices that assist students in their job search, as well.

Qualitative Requirements

  • In addition to the need for artistic talents, a storyboarder must be flexible, with the ability to produce illustrations in a variety of styles.He also needs to tell a good story by clearly interpreting a director's vision. While some storyboarders work alone, others work as part of a team, particularly on big-budget productionsmaking the abilities to take direction and to communicate with others essential. Additionally, presentation and communication skills are crucial.

Educational Requirements

  • A four-year degree is not required to become a storyboarder, although formal training in storyboarding and animation are usually expected. Candidates may opt to obtain a bachelor's degree or Master of Fine Arts degree, as well.

  • In 2012, the United States Department of Labor Statistics reported that the employment of artists is expected to increase 6 percent between 2012 and 2022. In 2012, median salaries for multimedia artists and animators was $61,370.
