Satellite TV Definition

Satellite television is one of the most popular forms of TV viewing. One of the reasons it is so popular is because it offers more viewing channels and a clearer signal. Some people may be confused about what a satellite TV actually does. Their processes are actually quite simple and interesting.

  1. Features

    • Satellite TV signals are broadcast from satellites that are in orbit. The signals we see on our TVs consist of three different stages. The first part is the original broadcaster at the television station. It sends off the radio waves from that station into the air. The second part of the system is the satellite orbiting in the sky. It receives the signal and magnifies it while broadcasting it back to Earth. The third part of the system is the receiver that is placed on roofs of buildings and other places to capture the signals that our viewed through the TV.

    Function

    • The purpose of satellite television is to enable the reception of television signals from a much longer range. Original television signals only reach a radius of about 28 miles. The orbiting satellites in space are able to send the signals much farther than any antenna broadcast could. Satellite television is also more reliable during adverse weather because the satellites are usually above the weather conditions.

    Components

    • The basic receiving dish provided by most satellite television companies consists of several different parts. The dish is designed to receive as many satellite signals as possible. There is also a cable that is connected to either a cable system or directly into the television that enables the signalss to reach the screen. The satellite receiver also descrambles the information sent over the air to be presented on screen. Most satellites now broadcast in MPEG form, which is a kind of video compression system that was first used online.

    Benefits

    • There are many benefits to a satellite television. Many more channels can be received and accessed. The greatest risk for viewing problems with this system is that an orbiting satellite might go down. This almost never happens, and there are also many back-up satellites that can take over. Satellites also are much smaller than they used to be, which looks better on a rooftop.

    Warning

    • There are still some problems that can occur with satellite television. Sometimes the cords can get loose or disrupted which will cause a problem with viewing. Extreme weather can also disrupt the signal, because the waves cannot reach through the interference. Other electronic devices can also sometimes cause a disruption to the signal. Make sure to remove other electronic devices from the immediate vicinity of the satellite receiving box.
