Uses of Fosamax

Fosamax is a prescription medication commonly prescribed for the treatment of osteoporosis and arthritis. Fosamax was first approved by the FDA in 1995, and is also used for treatment of Paget's bone disease.

  1. How Fosamax Works

    • Fosamax is in a class of medicines called bisphosphonates. It works because it alters the cyclic nature of how bones are broken down in the body. By taking Fosamax, osteoporosis and Paget's bone disease sufferers are able to build bone mass while slowing down the process of bone loss.

    Fosamax for Paget's Bone Disease

    • Paget's bone disease is a condition which causes the bones and joints in the body to break down and deteriorate. Healthy bones are able to break down and rebuild thoughout one's life cycle, but sufferers of Paget's disease of the bone are not able to rebuild or maintain healthy bone conditions. Paget's disease of the bone can be very painful, and Fosamax can be prescribed to help rebuild the bone mass while managing pain.

    Fosamax and Osteoporosis

    • Osteoporosis (whose name literally means "porous bones") is a condition which, like Paget's disease, causes bones to break down in the body. Because the bone mass becomes so brittle with osteoporosis they become more delicate, causing fractures and breaks to occur more frequently. Fosamax helps rebuild bone mass to a healthy level so sufferers of osteoporosis are not at risk of bone fracture.

    Dosages of Fosamax

    • Fosamax comes in prescription dosages of 10 mg up to 70 mg. Take Fosamax as directed by your physician. It is important that you do not skip a dose of Fosamax. It is also important that you stay sitting or standing upright for 30 minutes after taking Fosamax. Lying down after taking Fosamax can alter how the medication is absorbed into your system. It is important that you take Fosamax in the morning with a full glass of water. Don't take Fosamax with a meal or with anything other than water.

    Dangers of Fosamax

    • It is important that your doctor monitor your bone density while you are taking Fosamax. Bone density tests will ensure that Fosamax is helping to improve your bone mass, so do not skip or miss an appointment with your doctor while you are taking this medication. It is important that you tell your doctor if you suffer from low blood calcium (hypoglycemia) or if you have a history of kidney disease before taking Fosamax.
