3D House Designing
3D house models are used for a variety of purposes. They are employed by architects and designers to help relate a design to customers; by filmmakers to add 3D props to CGI animated scenes; and by 3D artists to render their images. If you would like to design your own 3D house to use yourself or for sale to others, you will need a 3D-modeling program. Google SketchUp specializes in exactly this type of modeling. There are several key points to designing a 3D house in SketchUp which is free for home or personal use.
-
Preparation
-
Before a modeler starts designing a house in SketchUp, he generally will want to sit and brainstorm out ideas for his house design. Using a pencil and paper he will draw out roughly the shape and appearance of the house, including all the features he would like to have.
Open SketchUp
-
When first opening SketchUp, the modeler is presented with an almost blank view containing only a ground plane and a 2D human figure. The ground plane is the surface onto which the modeler first draws the basic outline of the house, while the human figure is present to serve as a reference for sizing objects like doors, walls and stairways. It can be moved to different positions in the scene or deleted entirely.
-
Modeling
-
The modeler now will start the modeling process by selecting drawing tools, such as the "Rectangular" tool or the "Line" tool and drawing out the shape of the house on the ground plane. The modeler can then use the "Push/Pull" tool to raise the object to the desired height of the top of the wall. He can then use the "Line" tool, "Push/Pull" tool and the other editing tools to create the various parts of the house, such as the roof (with its slope).
Features and Furniture
-
Now the modeler can click on the "3D Warehouse" icon located in the top panel. This provides access to thousands of free-to-use 3D models of things like windows, doors, furniture and appliances that can be added to the design. To add an item, the item is first selected. It then appears in the scene and can be placed where you need it and can be resized to fit.
Adding Colors and Textures
-
Finally, the modeler can add new colors and textures to her model's walls and floors by clicking on the "Materials" icon. This will bring up the materials panel, where the modeler can browse through the many categories of colors and textures available and then apply them. This is done by selecting a texture and then clicking on a wall or other polygon face that you want to change. The texture is instantly applied.
