Laptop computers are a convenient alternative to desktop varieties. They are portable, allowing access and information to travel with the owner, and take up less space. They are sometimes a cheaper option for those looking into buying in a computer, but still a significant investment. For individuals and organizations that cannot afford to purchase a laptop, there are some grant options available.

Students

Few, if any, grants exist for individuals to purchase laptops for personal or business use. However, some scholarships exist for students to receive laptops. Chickasaw Nation Education Services offers laptop scholarships to college students of Chickasaw descent. The City Youth Now program offers refurbished laptops to San Francisco at-risk youth. A child's social worker or other professional working with him must fill out an application.

Recognizing the importance of technology in education, some programs offers laptops for classroom use. Hewlett Packard offers yearly grants that educators can use for technology in the classroom. The Computers for Youth program provides computers through the Take It Home program. In this case, the computers actually go to a child's home and the teachers are encouraged to incorporate use of the computers in their curriculum.

Sometimes the laptops are necessary for administrative use; other times for community use. The Verizon Foundation emphasizes technology use in the grants it disperses. Many grants specify that their funds either should or should not go toward equipment costs. Grant seekers can take advantage of the equipment grants and apply to get laptops for their classroom or organization, as may students. If a scholarship is open for equipment or technology use, students may be able to use it for laptops too. Always follow the guidelines provided by the funding organization.
