Natural Low Thyroid Function Cures

Low thyroid function, also known as hypothyroidism, equates to reduced activity of the thyroid gland. This gland produces the hormones thyroxine (T4) and triiodothyronine (T3), which are responsible for basic cellular functions throughout the body. In hypothyroidism, the gland either does not produce sufficient hormones or the body is unable to use them efficiently. Hashimoto's thyroiditis is the main cause of the condition. This autoimmune disease causes the thyroid to become inactive. Hormone replenishment is essential to treatment. Natural therapies can support treatment. Be sure to discuss any natural therapy with your doctor.

  1. Herbal Treatments

    • According to the University of Maryland Medical Center, the following herbal treatments can enhance low thyroid function.

Green tea provides strong antioxidant activity; take 250 to 500 milligrams daily. Coleus and guggul both stimulate thyroid activity; take 50 to 100 milligrams three times a day and 250 to 500 milligrams three times a day, respectively. Bladderwrack, rich in iodine, can support low thyroid function in people with an iodine deficiency. Take 600 milligrams one to three times daily. Talk to a doctor before using this herb.

    Supplements

    • A daily multivitamin can improve general health and help to make up for any nutritional deficiencies in the diet. Omega-3 fatty acids strengthen the immune system and treat inflammation. Take one or two capsules or one or two tablespoons of fish oil daily. Vitamin C is a powerful antioxidant and immunity booster. Take 500 to 1,000 milligrams daily. Alpha-lipoic acid is another powerful antioxidant; take 25 to 50 milligrams twice a day. L-tyrosine is beneficial for general thyroid health. Do not use if you have high blood pressure and be sure to discuss this treatment with a doctor if you are already taking standard thyroid medication. Hypothyroidism can cause gastrointestinal problems like constipation; probiotics can address these issues. Take a supplement as directed on the label and pay attention to refrigeration instructions. Iodine supplements are helpful only if you are deficient in iodine and should not be used otherwise. Consult with your doctor about this treatment. According to Dr. Andrew Weil, if you suffer from Hashimoto's syndrome, herbal supplements like tumeric and ginger are good for reducing inflammation caused by this condition. He instructs to take as directed on the product label.

    Diet

    • Food allergies worsen this condition. Common allergens include dairy, wheat, soy, corn, preservatives and chemical food additives. You may want to be tested for food allergies. Consume foods rich in B vitamins and iron, like whole grains and fresh and sea vegetables. Certain foods contain substances that negatively interact with the thyroid in people with hypothyroidism. Avoid broccoli, cabbage, Brussels sprouts, cauliflower, kale, spinach, turnips, soybeans, peanuts, linseed, pine nuts, millet, cassava and mustard greens. If you are on thyroid medication, consult with your doctor before eating soy products; they may disrupt proper absorption of thyroid hormones. Stay away from white flour and reduce your intake of red meat. Trans fats, often found in commercially baked goods, are not a suitable form of fat. Do not drink alcohol.

Consume lots of fruits and vegetables; they are rich in important antioxidants. Increase intake of lean meats, cold-water fish and beans to address protein needs. Use healthy cooking oils like olive oil.

    Contrast hydrotherapy

    • Alternating hot and cold applications to the neck can enhance thyroid function. Use a heat pack and either an ice pack or ice wrapped in a soft, dry cloth. Apply the heat for three minutes and the cold for one. Repeat this three times. Perform this set of three applications two or three times a day.

    Other suggestions

    • According to the University of Maryland Medical Center, massage and acupuncture can be of help. Acupuncture can successfully treat conditions resulting from hormonal problems, like hypothyroidism. Massage improves circulation and relieves stress. Do not smoke, and try to exercise for at least 30 minutes five days a week.
