Tioconazole Side Effects

Tioconazole is an antifungal medication used to treat vaginal yeast infections, athlete's foot and ringworm of the groin ("jock itch"). Available in both prescription and over-the-counter strengths, it can be dispensed in the form of a tablet, cream, suppository or tampon. Like all prescription medications, tioconazole has potential side effects that may require medical attention.

  1. Common Side Effects

    • According to the Mayo Clinic, side effects of tioconazole that are considered common but not serious include itching and a slight reddening of the skin. These symptoms should clear within a few days of dosing. If they continue, the patient should cease tioconazole use and consult a physician.

    Serious Side Effects

    • Serious side effects, as cited by the Mayo Clinic, include burning, extensive reddening, and swelling. A patient experiencing these symptoms should immediately consult with a physician before continuing tioconazole doses.

    Severe Side Effects

    • Severe side effects that require immediate medical attention include abdominal cramps, excessive vaginal discharge, headache and stomach discomfort. Symptoms of an allergic reaction may include rash and signs of skin irritation that were not present before using the medication.

    Existing Medical Conditions

    • Before using tioconazole, a patient should advise her physician of existing medical conditions such as pregnancy or allergies to certain food products, preservatives, dyes or animal dander. According to PDRHealth, women who are breastfeeding are advised against using tioconazole without physician approval.

    Interactions

    • Tioconazole has the potential to adversely interact with many prescription and over-the-counter dermatology medications. Patients should check with their physicians before using tioconazole in conjunction with another skin product. Douching is not generally recommended for women's health, but it is considered especially unsafe while using tioconazole. Although not considered extremely dangerous, alcohol consumption is not advised while using tioconazole.
