Dandruff in Dogs
Just like humans, dogs can be plagued with unsightly dandruff. Although this dry skin problem is common, it is easily prevented and cured. However, if excessive itching, open lesions and fever are associated with the dandruff, seek veterinary attention immediately. Dandruff can be a warning sign of other canine ailments.

Piles of dead skin cells, white and flaky in appearance, are known as dandruff. It is usually visible in the dog's bed or on the surface of his coat. The dry flakes can build up and become more noticeable if the dog is not bathed.
Causes

Dry skin caused by too much bathing or a dry, arid environment can cause dandruff. Feeding the dog a poor diet, such as dog foods that use bulk fillers like corn and wheat, can also cause dry skin. Dandruff can also be a symptom of a flea or mite infestation; scratching at the parasites causes skin to flake off as dandruff.

Itchy skin is a common side effect of dandruff. The dog's coat may also look dull and brittle, since it lacks moisturizing oils. Extremely dry skin, that is scratched often by the dog, may lead to red rashy hot spots.

Brush the dog's coat often. Regular grooming will stimulate hair growth and circulation in the skin, reducing the chances for dry skin and dandruff. Rub a small amount of olive oil or tea tree oil into the dog's skin weekly for extra moisture. Feed the pet premium quality dog foods that are high in protein, fatty acids and added vitamins and minerals to nourish skin from the inside out.
Installing a humidifier in the home can help moisturize the pet's skin, while increasing the overall humidity in the home. Make sure the dog has access to water at all times, and is not suffering from dehydration.

Wash the dog with moisturizing shampoo and warm water. Select a dog shampoo with oatmeal, tea tree oil or olive oil for extra moisturizing. Use a medicated shampoo to rid the dog of fleas or mites. Avoid bathing the dog more than once every few months, since bathing can dry out the dog's skin. Apply moisturizing sprays to the dog's coat. Soothe hot spots with a topical cortisone spray.
