Frontal Sinus Pressure Relief
Sinus pressure can come on suddenly and be caused for various reasons. Some people experience sinus pressure from the common cold, others from allergies and still others from a sinus infection. People who suffer from sinus pressure typically experience pain and discomfort behind the eyes, in the center of the forehead or at the very back of the head. These symptoms can be relieved through a few different approaches.

Causes
-
Frontal sinus pressure is caused either by trapped air or the inflammation of the sinus cavity. This typically occurs when a person has a cold or allergies but is also common during flying, due to the change in air pressure. When a person gets a head cold, the sinus cavity becomes irritated and can become inflamed, pushing on the eyes, ears and cheek area.
Common Medication
-
Typical sinus pressure can be alleviated by taking common, over-the-counter decongestants. Decongestants will actively sooth the inflammation of the sinus cavity, returning it back to its original size, resulting in a decrease of sinus pressure. If the sinus pressure is being caused by allergies then an over-the-counter antihistamine will eventually stop the end result of your irritated sinus cavity.

Prescribed Medication
-
If frontal sinus pressure is the result of a sinus infection, the first line of defense is to get rid of the infection and treat the irritated sinus at the same time. If common medication does not provide relief, it is recommended to see a doctor to obtain a prescription for antibiotics which should kill the infection within 3 to 4 days. If the pressure is casing severe pain and discomfort a doctor may also recommend a prescription pain reliever.
Natural Remedies
-
Many natural remedies are very effective at relieving frontal sinus pressure. One of the most common is to place rice in a sock, microwave it for 2 minutes and then lay it across your nose and eyes for 10 to 15 minutes. The heat will help loosen the thick mucus that may be causing the frontal pressure. The heat will also help with any pain associated with the pressure. Another natural remedy is to run a humidifier in a small, enclosed space. Sitting in a highly humid environment will provide moister to the sinus cavity, soothing it, causing the irritation to subside.
Prevention
-
There are a number of ways to prevent frontal sinus pressure. The best preventative way is to drink at least six 8-ounce glasses of water a day and get plenty of rest (at least 8 hours a night). Many sinus issues are caused by a weakened immune system, resulting in sinus congestion and pressure. Another way to prevent excessive sinus pressure is to take a decongestant as soon as you feel your sinuses getting congested. An over-the-counter decongestant should prevent excessive irritation and mucus build-up that causes frontal sinus pressure.
