Using a streamlined online system introduced in 2013, Australia has a quick turnaround on visas for United States passport holders traveling on visits of 90 days or less. American travelers can generally expect a properly completed visa application to be electronically processed within one working day.
Processing times for other types of visas involving study, work, medical, family, longer stays or residency will vary. The digital approval process does not require a passport to be mailed. No stamp is entered on the passport's pages, as the visa is electronically linked to each passport. Find the application at the Australian Government Department of Immigration's website or seek professional assistance from a travel agent or airline.
Credit Card Payment
The Electronic Travel Authority charge is payable by credit card online. Each person traveling must have a valid ETA or visa, including infants and children.
A traveler's U.S. passport must be valid through the date of exit from Australia. Once obtained, the authorization is valid for multiple visits of three months or less within 12 months from the date of issue.
