About Roma in Italy
Rome, or Roma in Italian, is a great city for sightseeing because you can get to many locations on foot and you can stumble upon ruins in the middle of the city. July is extremely hot and in August many businesses are closed for vacation, so try to time your trip by avoiding those months. Although many people speak some English, carry an Italian phrase book.

The Colosseum
-
The Colosseum, or Il Colosseo, is one of the most famous monuments, and attracts huge crowds. Try to go early. The giant arena may not look like much now. You have to use your imagination to reconstruct the gladiator battles once fought there. There are guidebooks with photos that superimpose what the Colosseum looked like in ancient times with its present state.
Trevi Fountain
-
The Trevi Fountain, or Fontana di Trevi, is one of Rome's best-known fountains. Make sure to bring small change with you when you visit. Stand with your back to the fountain and throw a coin over your shoulder; this ensures that you will return to Rome. The fountain is crowded with picture-taking tourists day and night. You should see it both times of day; it is truly magical at night, when it is illuminated. During the day, you can see the carvings better.

Roman Forum
-
The Roman Forum, or Foro Romano, are extensive marble ruins that were the center of life in ancient Rome. This was the marketplace, the temple and more. Tour groups swarm the place by mid-morning, so if you go early, you can wander relatively undisturbed. While you can often find free tours in English, you are expected to tip.
Vatican City
-
Vatican City is where the Sistine Chapel, or Cappella Sistina, is. You'll also find museums with great tapestries and religious paintings and statues. The papal apartments are worth exploring. It is helpful to know the Biblical stories behind the paintings in the Sistine Chapel. Always check to be sure the Vatican is open; it closes on every Catholic or Italian holiday.
The Pantheon
-
The Pantheon, Il Pantheon, is an astounding architectural feat, with a great dome. The only source of light is the oculus in the center of the dome. The floor slants, and people crouch under the oculus to get a sense of it. Be sure to examine the massive bronze doors.
