Define Spousal Abuse
Spousal abuse can be defined as mental, physical and verbal attacks on ones person. The abuse of ones spouse, girlfriend/boyfriend or adult child can be defined as domestic violence, which is a crime in the United States and punishable with a fine and/or jail time depending on the severity of the abuse. Many people don't understand what defines spousal abuse and live with it for years because they are not aware of what constitutes abuse.
-
Verbal Abuse
-
If a spouse yells obscenities at you or screams at you for some of the most trivial things, this is a form of verbal abuse. Any type or form of conversation one sided or not that involves yelling that makes you feel worried or threatened is a form of abuse that can lead to different types of abuse if not stopped early in a relationship.
Mental Abuse
-
Mental abuse is characterized by a partner demeaning your character and insulting you to lower your self-esteem and self-worth. A spouse that tells you that you look fat and should diet in a disrespectful manner is a form of mental abuse. Your spouse telling you that you are no good at cooking or any other thing is a form of abuse, if it is done out of hatred.
-
Physical Abuse
-
Physical abuse can lead to injuries and death. Many spouses stay in relationships because the abuser promises to stop and never do it again. Physical abuse includes hitting, pushing, throwing things at another or any form of touching of the abused party. Even if no marks are left after the abuse, it is still considered physical abuse.
Emotional Abuse
-
Rejecting a person by giving him or her silent treatments, ignoring the person or acting as the person does not exist is a form of emotional abuse as well as mental abuse. Talking around the person as if they are not in the room is abuse, but is not considered the type of abuse that is a crime. A feeling of loneliness or abandonment also constitutes emotional abuse.
Domestic Violence/Abuse
-
Domestic violence includes physical and verbal abuse. Emotional and mental abuse is hard to prove, except in a defense for retaliation inflicted onto the abuser by the abused. Domestic abuse will result in one or both parties being arrested if the police are called. Domestic abuse is defined as pertaining to any persons living in the same household, which includes a spouse, child, friend or roommate.
