There are several types of tents in the world of outdoor camping and hiking. From the classic A-frame tents to the large cabin tents, there are all sorts of tents that will best suit anyone's outdoor needs and desires.

Traditional Types

Three examples of traditional tents include the yurt, wickiup and tipi. Yurts are tents that are round structures with wooden poles for support. They are usually covered with felt or canvas and are used by Asian nomads. The top of this tent has a crown shape with a hole in the top that allows for smoke to escape (from a campfire). The wikiup and tipi tents are similar to the yurt except they are used by American Indian tribes and are covered in animal hides rather than felt or canvas.

Most tents look completely different from traditional tents and have some special features. Most of them are light and easy to pick up and travel with, but some can be more complicated and heavier to carry. Some modern tents will feature excellent air flow for hot and humid weather conditions while others have the ability to retain heat for cold weather. In addition, with modern tents, people have the choice of purchasing one that is applicable for just one camper or that fits multiple campers.

A-frame Tents

Typically used by Boy Scouts, the A-frame tent is a classic tent that most people will recognize. These tents consist of two poles that each form a triangle figure and are used on either side of the tent to hold the tent together. There also is a central pole that ranges over the top of the tent, connecting the two triangle poles. The tent is usually made to hold just one person.

The dome tent uses two or three poles that pass through the top of the roof and are usually easy to pitch. The floor of the tent is generally either a square or hexagonal area that can provide a large amount of headroom and sometimes a separate room with a porch area. This type of tent offers good stability and handles all types of weather conditions better than other types. After the poles are in place, the tent is usually free standing and can be picked up and moved around. Once it is in a certain place, it can be held down with stakes or tied down with rope. It is one of the most popular tents used today.
Cabin Tents

Cabin tents are among the large tents that can be more work in carrying and setting up but provide a great amount of space for campers and durablility. They usually take several poles for assembly, forming a pentagon shape with a high ceiling and an enormous amount of floor space.
