Types of Tanning Lotion

Each year about 30 million people in the United States visit tanning salons with the main purpose of emerging as a bronzed god or goddess. The professional tanning industry generates $5 billion dollars annually. This figure also includes the sales of indoor tanning lotion. Most salons offer lotion in one-time use packets or multi-use bottles. The packets cost $3 to $7, while the bottles cost anywhere from $20 to $100.

    Introduction

  1. Tanning lotion is a very important product to have while using tanning equipment. In a study by the American Tanning Institute, 100 percent of the participants using lotion noticed an overall improvement in the darkness of their tan and their skin's condition. Those who did not use lotions did not have the same results. Tanning lotion not only helps people tan faster, but it also includes ingredients that prevent wrinkles. There are four main types of tanning lotion: accelerators, bronzer, tingle and after-tanning lotion.
  2. Accelerators

  3. Accelerators are the most popular and preferred lotions to those unfamiliar with the indoor tanning process. Accelerators do not contain bronzing ingredients, which allows less of a chance for error when applying the lotion. Accelerators use ingredients that promote melanin production when exposed to UV light. One of the most important reasons to use an accelerator is because it moisturizes the skin. Not only does moist skin tan better than dry skin, but using an accelerator encourages healthy-looking skin and provides an even-looking tan. Some ingredients in accelerators include melanin, L-tyrosine, green tea extract and natural oils.
  4. Bronzers

  5. Bronzing lotion is similar to an accelerator except it contains ingredients to deliver an instant golden look. Bronzers are often used to help speed up the tanning process. There are two types of bronzers: cosmetic and dihydroxyacetone (DHA). Cosmetic bronzer provides an immediate boost of bronze, but this color will wash off after a few times in the shower. DHA is a colorless chemical that will tan skin in about two to three hours. DHA bronzer will last four to six days and is also the main ingredient in sunless tanning such as the Mystic Tan spray booth. It is important that you wipe or wash your hands immediately after applying the lotion to prevent orange stains on your palms.
  6. Tingle Lotion

  7. Tingle lotion is the lotion that people either love or hate. The lotion seriously improves the tan because it increases the blood circulation and helps the oxygenation of the skin. The more the skin is oxygenated, the better it tans. As this process is going on, however, the skin becomes red and tingly. This is only a temporary heat flush and will subside in a couple of hours; however, some people cannot handle the lotion and develop allergic reactions. It is strongly recommended that you test the lotion on a small spot on your body to see if you can tolerate it. Most tingle lotions have bronzers added to them to deliver a one-two punch.
  8. After-Tan Lotion

  9. After-tan lotion is one of the most important types of lotion to use. After-tan lotion can be used either immediately after the tanning session or after a shower or bath. When using a tanning bed, you lose moisture from your skin. After-tan lotion has high amounts of antioxidants that protect the skin from damage and lock in moisture. By locking in moisture, skin will not flake off as easily and will maintain a golden brown color. Users will benefit from the quality of their skin condition and the extended life of their tan.
