Cymbalta is a medication available by prescription only and used for the treatment of depression. It is also used to treat general anxiety disorder, as well as other psychological conditions. Cymbalta is classified as an antidepressant and works by affecting brain chemicals that cause depression. Cymbalta is also prescribed for the treatment of Fibromyalgia. Side effects of Cymbalta include shortness of breath, uneven heart rate, nausea and vomiting and can persist for a few hours, days, weeks or even longer. It is important that you discuss any and all effects you experience with your doctor, as he may need to adjust your dosage of Cymbalta.

Dosage

  • It is important that you take Cymbalta as it was prescribed. Do not alter or miss a dose of this medicine. If you forget to take your Cymbalta, take it as soon as you remember. If your next scheduled dose is within four hours, then skip the missed dose and only take your regular dose. Do not double up on this medication, as this can cause Cymbalta overdose. Symptoms of Cymbalta overdose include rapid heartbeat, nausea or vomiting, lightheadedness, fainting, or the feeling of being confused or agitated. Diarrhea is also a symptom of Cymbalta overdose.

Medical History

  • Before taking Cymbalta, be sure to share with your doctor your full medical profile and history. It is very important that your doctor know what conditions you have been treated for in the past, so that he can determine whether Cymbalta could cause long-term effects or interact in any way with your other medical concerns. Cymbalta should not be taken if you have a history of glaucoma. Tell your doctor if you have diseases of the liver or kidney, or have a history of seizure, epilepsy or convulsions of any kind before taking Cymbalta. Your doctor should also be aware if you have a blood disorder or if your blood does not clot properly, or if you have been diagnosed or treated for bipolar disorder.

Long-Term Side Effects: Severe

  • Cymbalta is associated with some side effects which are considered severe and require immediate medical attention. Seek emergency care if you experience severe stomach pain, or a yellowing of the eyes and skin (Jaundice). Also consult a doctor immediately if you have been experiencing nausea or having difficulty urinating accompanied by a darker than usual coloration in your urine. It is also important that you seek medical attention if your stools are black or bloody, if you have difficulty concentrating or experience uneven heart rate or heart racing, start hallucinating or have severe headache. You may also experience difficulty breathing and stiff muscles or muscle aches as a result of taking Cymbalta.

Side Effects: Mild to Moderate

  • Some side effects of Cymbalta are less severe and may last for a few days, weeks or even longer. It is important that you consult your physician if you experience Cymbalta related side effects that include dizziness, feeling drowsy, constipation, gas or bloating, blurry vision or dryness in the mouth. Other side effects of Cymbalta include sleeping difficulty, muscle pain or fluctuations in your weight (gain or loss). Cymbalta may also cause you to have a decreased interest in sexual activity, or you may experience impotence or have difficulty achieving climax as a result of this medication.

Warning

  • It is important that you do not take Cymbalta while you are taking a type of drug called thioridazine (know as the brand Mellaril). Do not take Cymbalta within two weeks of taking an MAOI inhibitor drug. Tell your doctor about all the medications you are taking before starting Cymbalta. Do not drink alcoholic beverages while taking Cymbalta, as alcohol may interact with Cymbalta to cause long term damage to your liver. Do not operate heavy machinery or operate a motor vehicle while taking Cymbalta until you are sure as to how it will affect you.
