Psychic Ability in Children

A psychic is said to have a sixth sense that goes beyond touch, smell, hearing, taste and sight. Someone with psychic abilities might, for example, know when a person is going to stop by before they do. These mysterious abilities have even been attributed to children.

Understanding Types of Psychic Experience

According to Athena A Drewes, Psy.D. and Sally Feather, PhD, "there are several categories of psychic experiences: telepathy, clairvoyance, precognition and psychokinesis." A person with telepathic abilities is capable of knowing what another person is thinking. Clairvoyance is an awareness of places, objects and events. Precognition is the ability to randomly predict events that are going to happen. Psychokinesis is the mental ability to alter the physical state of an object.

Children and Psychic Abilities

A number of cases of apparent psychic ability involve children. According to Drewes and Feather, "Perhaps children are more open-minded about such experiences and do not yet accept as impossible what our society deems to be so, not accepting skepticism." The naivete and innocence of children may help them tap into their psychic ability without fear or question.

Study of Psychic Children

A study of psychic abilities in children done by Dr. Drewes showed that among 157 children who had psychic experiences, 77 percent of them displayed precognitive abilities. The children tested, both males and females, ranged from 10 to 18 years old. Female children seemed to have a higher success (65 percent) of psychic abilities than male children did (35 percent). Children also proved that they were startlingly accurate in predicting actions or events involving close friends instead of family members.

Responding to a Psychic Child

If your child displays psychic abilities, refrain from judgment, and instead try to embrace this ability as a talent. A psychic child performs daily activities just like children without psychic visions. These children tend to be easily hurt and very vulnerable because they know that they are different. It is important to show unconditional acceptance.

Advice

You should never try to force a child to display their psychic abilities. They usually have no control over when a vision will come to them. The more comfortable and relaxed they are the easier it will be for them to have an experience. If a child is pushed or demanded into showing their talent they may lose the ability altogether.
