Side Effects of Naprox

Naproxen, often shortened to "Naprox", is a drug commonly sold under the brand name Anaprox and is used to treat arthritis. As is common with prescription drugs, the use of Naproxen can lead to a variety of side effects, depending on the individual.

  1. Identification

    • Naproxen is a prescription drug which is considered an anti-inflammatory. According to Drugs.com it is used to treat a variety of conditions including "...rheumatoid arthritis, osteoarthritis, ankylosing spondylitis, and juvenile arthritis," as well as tendonitis, bursitis, gout, menstrual cramps and mild to moderate pain. As an anti-inflammatory, Naproxen blocks certain natural chemicals in the body that lead to inflammation. Naproxen is nonsteroidal.

    Common Side Effects

    • Users of Naproxen may experience the following common side effects: dizziness, drowsiness, headache, constipation, heartburn, diarrhea, gas, nausea, upset stomach and stuffy nose. In the event of worsening or persisting side effects, contact your doctor immediately as it may be a sign of a more serious condition.

    Serious Side Effects

    • Drugs.com relates that users of Naproxen may experience the following severe side effects in rare instances: "bloody or black, tarry stools; change in the amount of urine produced; chest pain; confusion; dark urine; depression; fainting; fast or irregular heartbeat; fever, chills, or persistent sore throat; mental or mood changes; numbness of an arm or leg; one-sided weakness; red, swollen, blistered, or peeling skin; ringing in the ears; seizures; severe headache or dizziness; severe or persistent stomach pain or nausea; severe vomiting; shortness of breath; sudden or unexplained weight gain; swelling of hands, legs or feet; unusual bruising or bleeding; unusual joint or muscle pain; unusual tiredness or weakness; vision or speech changes; vomit that looks like coffee grounds; yellowing of the skin or eyes". Use

    • Always take Naproxen according to your prescription. Naproxen may be taken with or without food, but taking it without food may cause an upset stomach. Always take with full glass (8 oz.) of water. Never chew or break the tablet as doing so can trigger an incorrect release of medication. Consult a full list of possible drug interactions before taking regularly.

    Warning

    • Because the use of Naproxen can cause dizziness and drowsiness, be sure to take note of how the medication affects you before driving or operating heavy machinery.
