What Is the Definition of Network Interface Card?

A computer network interface card (NIC) is the hardware added to the machine that allows it to communicate with the network. The hardware is now normally included with computers, especially in laptops that require wireless technology for network access. The MAC address is a physical address for the network card. The MAC address is hardcoded to the device by the manufacturer. This address is unique from all other network cards. It is the physical address of the computer, and it is used in routing packages to and from the machines on the network. Without a MAC address, the network card and the computer would not be able to communicate.

IP Address

The IP address is the dynamic address bound to a network card. TCP/IP is a standard way for machines to communicate. It provides IP address that are bound to network cards and packages the information using TCP. Routers use the IP address to send data from other segments of the network or from the Internet to internal computers. When reading data from the network card, one piece of information always included is the IP address of the machine.

Connection to the Computer

The network interface card is an internal hardware component of the computer. Most new computers come with a network card, but if one is not included, it needs to be purchased before any type of network connectivity is available. To install it, the user needs to open the computer. PCI slots are available on the computer's motherboard. These slots are normally white. Ensure the computer is turned off and insert the network card into the motherboard's PCI slot.
