Androgyny
-
Androgyny is a large part of the emo subculture. Often guys will wear what is seen as girl accessories, such as belts and tight skinny jeans. Many emo teens are often confused for the opposite sex due to the similarities in male and female emo style. Often males and females with emo style will wear large sunglasses, headbands, band tee shirts, studded belts and items with stars, stripes and bright colors. Androgyny is also a large part of emo hair styles. There are some hairstyles which are similar for both guys and girls in this subculture, such as the emo mullet, the mo-hawk or a short razor cut bob with long side swept bangs.
Short Styles
-
According to luv-emo.com, "shorter emo hair styles are all about shape and a good guideline to a basic cut is short and snappy in the back, and longer and sharply razored in the front." This is a very popular emo haircut with both males and females. This cut is then straightened with a straightening iron and styled with either hair wax, hair glue or hair spray so it stays in place. The bangs in this cut are typically long and side swept or a straight blunt cut.
The mohawk is another short style popular in the emo movement. The mohawk was originally seen as part of the 1970s punk subculture, but it is now shared with the modern day emo movement as well. The mohawk is also worn by both males and females.

Long Emo Hair
-
According to hairstyles.info, "the long emo haircut involves a long and shaggy cut. With this style, the bangs are worn in a long fringe and brushed to one side of the face in the same manner as with the short emo haircut." A method used a lot by emo girls is using a straightening iron to make hair very straight, then adding a lot of volume to the top layers of hair by teasing and then adding hairspray. Long emo hair typically has many razored layers. The hair is often accompanied with bright hair clips, barrettes, extensions or headbands.
Emo Mullet
-
The emo mullet is worn by both males and females. According to My Emo Hairstyles, "the look is similar to the long bangs comb-over approach. However, on this style of emo hairstyles, the back of the hair exposes a long tail and is dragged to one side of the head in most cases." This hairstyle can be worn either short or long. Some individuals in the emo subculture also shave designs into their mullet or add bright colors to add variation.
