History
-
The trench coat was developed in the World War I to be part of the British uniform. Its name comes from the trenches, where men first wore it. Veterans who returned from the front continued to wear their trench coats, and the coats became a popular fashion item for both men and women.
Types of Leather
-
Italian leather is the dressiest variety---it is soft, pliable cowhide leather. However, it also tends to be thinner than other leathers, so if you live in a cold climate, it might not be the best choice. Deerskin and buckskin leathers are thicker and very durable, often appearing in coats that will be used outdoors or in sport hunting. Patent leather is leather with a shiny plastic outer coating---this makes it good for wet weather and gives it a stylish appearance. Crocodile, lizard and snakeskin trench coats are also a type of leather; these are normally quite expensive.

Masculine
-
Usually you can tell the difference between men and women's trench coats (or any type of coat) because men's coats button with the left flap over the right, and women's coats button with the right flap over the left. Popular masculine trench coat cuts are typically all long-sleeved trench coats with either a double-breasted front or a high collar. They range in length from mid-thigh to mid-calf and may or may not have buttons along the sleeves. Colors usually include black, dark and light brown, and gray.
Feminine
-
Feminine trench coats have a bit more variety. They range from the very short trench coat, which falls to the top of the thigh, to the very long trench coat, which can reach ankle length. Colors include black, browns and grays like masculine coats, but female trench coats can also be found in bright accent colors such as red, purple, green or blue. Most female trench coats are double or single breasted with open collars, but occasionally you will find high-collared coats for women. Some women also prefer to wear men's trench coats when they are going for a more rugged look.
Dressy
-
Slim-fitting trench coats that hug the body and cinch at the waist offer a dressier look. For women, dressy trench coats normally fall to knee length. Men's dress trench coats can range from knee-length up to mid-thigh. Cowhide leathers, snakeskin or crocodile, and very fine calfskin leathers are the materials most often used in dressy trenches. Dark colors are typically best because they go with both men's and women's evening wear.
Punk and Gothic
-
Leather trench coats are also very popular outerwear for punk or gothic dress styles. These kinds of trench coats are generally much longer, reaching to ankle or floor length on both men and women. Black is the most common base color, but other colors may be included as accents or in patches or designs sewn onto the back and front lapels of the trench coat. Women's coats that flare at the waist are popular, as are women's coats with ribbon lacing and metal zippers. Men's coats with metal zippers and chains or extra pockets are also common for this style.
