The Qualification for a District Manager


Many district managers oversee managers and branch managers and must ensure operations are running smoothly and efficiently. District managers must have the ability to multitask and keep control of their entire staff. Most district managers will report to a regional manager regarding the operations of their department and staff. District managers must have good people skills and analytical abilities.The salary can range from $30,000 to more than $110,000. Most positions require two to five years of experience in a leadership capacity, usually within the same industry, such retail, sales or pharmaceuticals.

Leadership Skills

  • A district manager needs excellent leadership skills. A district manager will have to provide guidance and instruction when managing her staff, usually a team of managers running an office or department of a company. District managers need to have the ability to oversee the operations of many managers to ensure they are running profitable operations. If there is a shortfall with goals and objectives, a district manager will need to step in with corrective measures. District managers must have the ability to lead by example.

Written Communication

  • A district manager will need to communicate with his staff by written correspondence. To be effective, he must communicate thoroughly so there are no misunderstandings and misinterpretations. A district manager must be able to understand the personality of every manager he supervises so he can communicate to them in a manner that is consistent with their learning style.


  • A district manager must be able to have meetings with her staff and provide information regarding new marketing promotions, advertising, profitability strategies and new products and services. District managers should be confident, poised and deliver information with authority. Sometimes meetings will take place in person and sometimes by conference call. In any format, a district manager should be able to give managers the information needed in a manner that is entertaining and informative.


  • District managers must be able to motive and inspire their staff. Periodically district managers will provide motivation by way of encouragement. Every manager is not motivated by the same criteria. A district manager must be able to use different motivation techniques on a regular basis, based on the need of every manager. Sometimes motivation is provided by using cash, trips, gifts and recognition.


  • A district manager will need to train managers to effectively manager their operations, stores or departments. There are many forms of training and education. A district manager will need to utilize several techniques such as one-on-one training, workshops and company meetings. Once the information has been delivered, a district manager will need a feedback mechanism to ensure the information has been received, understood and put into action.
