Fun Family Reunion Ideas

Too often, when people think of family reunions, they cringe. They picture being forced to mingle with relatives they don't remember and have nothing in common with. With a little creativity, though, you can help people break the ice and discover family connections. Your family will thank you for it later. Does this Spark an idea?

  1. A Cook-Off

    • If you have a few cooks in your family, hold a cook-off. They could prepare food ahead of time, or at the reunion. Let everyone taste their dishes and vote on them. (Tip: Don't announce how close the results are!) The cooks will enjoy it, and so will everyone else.

    Storytelling

    • Ask older members of the family to tell stories about when they were kids. The grandchildren will love hearing embarrassing stories about their parents. Storytelling is a great way to bring the whole family together.

    A Triathalon or Olympics

    • This activity can have traditional and silly events. Intersperse races with water-balloon tosses, horseshoes, and swimming relays (if you're near a pool or lake). Include non-physical activities like riddles and word-finds to give everyone a breather and involve all members of the family. Give fun, inexpensive prizes like inexpensive stuffed animals to the winners.

    A Family Collage

    • Bring a big piece of poster board and a bunch of paints, plus magazines to cut pictures out of, and other art supplies such as construction paper and glue. Bring pictures of all family members to use in the collage, or ask everyone to bring their own pictures. Work from a table in a central location. Each person can add something to the collage, making it a group effort.

    Games

    • Hold a scavenger hunt at your reunion. Let people work in pairs or teams to find the hidden clues, and have a prize for the winner. Or play games such as a sack race, capture the flag, red light green light, musical chairs, tug of war, or freeze tag (see family-reunion.com for descriptions). Many adults as well as kids will enjoy these games.

    A Talent Show

    • The website Family-Reunion.com suggests holding a talent show at your reunion. Your family undoubtedly has a wide range of talents and interests, which other family members may not even know about. Aside from being entertaining, a talent show gives you time to get to know your family members better. And that's what reunions are all about.
