Definition of Psychic
There is not just one definition of psychic--there are various forms of psychic ability. But all psychic ability defies scientific principals and has no natural explanation. Psychic phenomenon has its early beginnings dating back thousands of years, especially in ancient Egypt. The 19th century began interest in clairvoyance, telepathy, precognition, necromancy and out of body experiences. All of these paranormal occurrences are types of psychic phenomena, and each requires different types of psychic ability.
-
Clairvoyance
-
The word clairvoyance originated in France during the 17th century and means "clear vision." Clairvoyance is the ability to see certain facts about a person, event or an object through other means than the five senses. A psychic with clairvoyant powers gathers information about past, future or current events. Some clairvoyants can see events as they occur in other parts of the world, while others can see past events in detail.
Some psychic clairvoyants also have the power to hear things other people cannot, such as spirits and deceased or mute people. Touch is another method clairvoyants use. When touching the hands of another person, the psychic gathers information, including personal and emotional details.
Telepathy
-
A psychic who has telepathic powers is able to read the minds of other people, gathering thoughts or emotions. This is different from clairvoyance because the other person transfers thoughts to the psychic rather than the clairvoyant gathering the information. Telepathy is also known as thought transference. It is considered a form of ESP (extrasensory perception).

Precognition
-
Precognition comes from Latin and means "acquiring knowledge." Psychics with precognition are able to see future events by either feeling emotional responses about the future or seeing images of events.
Some telepathic psychics see future events while in a dream state, not remembering the event when they awaken. When the future event happens, the psychic remembers bits and pieces. This is commonly referred to as déjà-vu.
Necromancy
-
Psychics who perform necromancy or mediumship are able to communicate with the dead. Some people see necromancy as black magic and calling upon demons. Modern psychic mediums with powers to speak to the dead are not practicing black arts but are using psychic powers through séances and channeling to speak to spirits. The spirits of the dead often reveal to the psychic a problem that needs to be resolved to prevent a catastrophe, or the spirit might have a message to be related to someone they left behind.
Astral Projection
-
An out-of-body experience is referred to as astral projection. Psychics with the ability to go outside their physical bodies and observe them are using the powers of astral projection. The psychic's soul is free to wander and observe events away from the body.
Astral projection is a common occurrence of people who have had near death experiences, either from accidents or surgeries. Their spirit floats above their body, and they see their own surgery taking place or see family members gathered around.
Out-of-body experiences also occur when the psychic is sleeping but the spirit travels to other locations, viewing the events taking place.
