Cymbalta & Nerve Pain

Cymbalta is a medication that has been approved as a form of treatment for depression and anxiety. Cymbalta is also proven to help with fibromyalgia (widespread pain of the joints and muscles) and nerve pain. If you are experiencing nerve pain, you should speak to your doctor about the benefits of Cymbalta.

  1. Side Effects of Cymbalta

    • According to the official manufacturers of Cymbalta, "in clinical studies, the most common side effect of Cymbalta in all clinical studies combined was nausea. Most people were not bothered enough by nausea to stop taking Cymbalta." Other side effects experienced include lack of appetite, constipation, fatigue, dry mouth and an increase in sweating. Patients who used Cymbalta for nerve pain experienced dizzy spells and weakness.

    Risk

    • People who suffery from hepatic insufficiency (severe liver damage) are not recommended to take Cymbalta. The elderly need to be monitored closely when taking Cymbalta. Dosages (available in 20, 30 and 60 mg capsules) should only be increased under careful supervision. Since there is not enough evidence to signify the effects of Cymbalta on pregnant and nursing women, it is not recommended for use. Pregnant or nursing women should speak with their doctor about the risks of Cymbalta.

    About Nerve Pain

    • In some cases of neuropathic pain (damaged, injured or dysfunctional nerve fibers) there is no specific cause. Some patients with nerve pain will experience burning or shooting pain in the affected area as well as tingling and numbness. Nerve pain is experienced differently by each patient. No two cases may be exactly alike. Although some nerve pain can be treated with ibuprofen or naproxen, some patients need antidepressants such as Cymbalta to treat their symptoms.

    Cymbalta Warning

    • As with any antidepressant, Cymbalta may increase thoughts and behaviors of suicide. Cymbalta manufacturers states that "anyone considering the use of Cymbalta or any other antidepressant in a child, adolescent or young adult must balance this risk with the clinical need." Anyone who takes Cymbalta should be monitored carefully for potential suicidal actions or behavioral changes.

    Identifying Nerve Pain

    • If you suspect that you are experiencing nerve pain, you should speak with your doctor about the benefits of Cymbalta. Your physician will give you an exam to determine the level of pain as well as the cause. He will ask you questions about where the pain is located, how often you experience it and if there is anything specific that makes you hurt more or less.
