Sinus Cavity Problems

The sinus cavity is a large area of empty space in the head that serves the purpose of preventing dust, dirt, pollen and other airborne particles from entering into the lungs. The sinus cavity is soft, supple tissue that is lined with a light mucus that catches any foreign matter that enters the nose. The sinus cavity plays an essential role in keeping the lungs free from unwanted substances, yet the sinus cavity is very sensitive, and causes many problems and issues.

  1. Facts

    • According to www.ent-consult.com, 35 million people in the United States suffer from sinusitis, an inflammation or irritation of the sinus cavity. Many people are misinformed, believing that sinusitis is simply an infection in the sinuses--but it is much broader than that. It encompasses all forms of irritation and inflammation whether an infection is involved or not. The other most common issue among people with sinus-cavity problems is allergies. Allergies can directly affect the sinus cavity, causing it to drain faster than normal, resulting in a runny nose.

    Prevention

    • The best way to prevent inflammation of the sinus cavity is to avoid certain foods and drinks that can aggravate the sinuses. Foods such as dairy products, caffeinated beverages and highly processed sugars can all lead to an irritation of the sinus cavity. It is also recommended to avoid very dry environments. For those who live in dry climates, it is advisable to run a humidifier in your home, especially when you sleep. Also drink plenty of water (at least six 8 oz. cups a day) to strengthen the immune system and keep the fluids in your body loose and free-flowing.

    Complications

    • If sinus-cavity issues go unaddressed, they can lead to very detrimental complications. When a sinus infection goes untreated it can spread to various areas of the body like the throat, ears and even the brain. Infections have the potential to spread and get out of hand, causing a situation where the body's immune system is unable to fight it off. In these rare cases, a person may have to be hospitalized and placed on high doses of antibiotics.

    Treatment

    • There are many treatments for sinus issues. For sinus-cavity issues related to allergies, it is recommended to take an antihistamine during highly allergic seasons such as spring and summer. For other types of sinus-cavity problems, a person can take an over-the-counter decongestant to help the sinus cavity remain its intended size. Take gentle care when blowing your nose, don't expose yourself to people with cold symptoms, and get plenty of rest and drink lots of water. If the sinus cavity problems get out of control, consult a doctor.

    Identification

    • Sinus-cavity problems are easily identified by a stuffy or runny nose. Sometimes severe irritation can cause tooth or eye pain and make a person feel very tired. Any discharge from the nose that is thick and yellowish in color may indicate an infection has set in and the person should see a doctor to begin antibiotics. Excessive sneezing or bloody discharge from the nose is another sign of a significant issue in the sinus cavities.
