Benzoyl peroxide is an ingredient in acne preparations that has been available for over 30 years. Initially only available by prescription, benzoyl peroxide is now included in many over-the-counter acne preparations. Products that contain benzoyl peroxide may cause a variety of adverse effects.

Mild Side Effects

Benzoyl peroxide works by creating free radicals in the surface layers of the skin to kill bacteria that contribute to mild to moderate acne rosacea and acne vulgaris. It is an anti-bacterial agent that has been clinically shown to control Propionibacterium acnes, a bacteria on the skin with contributes to acne. Adverse effects may include dry skin, irritation, peeling, redness, inflammation and pain.
Severe Side Effects

Severe adverse effects associated with using products that contain benzoyl peroxide occur in approximately 5 of every 1,000 patients and may require an evaluation by a physician. Severe reactions include excessive itching, burning, or skin tenderness, hives, rash, swelling of the mouth, lips, tongue or face or extreme dryness.

Time Frame

The most frequent time frame for adverse effects from using products containing benzoyl peroxide occur when initially starting treatment with this chemical. Your doctor or dermatologist may recommend choosing a lower dose or less frequent use to reduce the occurrence of adverse effects.
Prevention/Solution

When adverse effects become bothersome, it is recommended to reduce the amount of product used or reduce the frequency of use of products containing benzoyl peroxide. Use only one product containing benzoyl peroxide to reduce the risk of adverse reactions. Control peeling and dryness with a non-alcohol lotion.

Read package directions when using products containing benzoyl peroxide. Read ingredients on all products used to control acne as some acne preparations are not to be used in conjunction with benzoyl peroxide. When initiating treatment with products that contain benzoyl peroxide, use the lowest percentage available to monitor your reaction to this ingredient.
