Amazon Kindle Vs. Sony Reader 700
E-book readers have been slowly gaining popularity since their introduction. Currently, two of the most popular e-book readers available on the market are the Amazon Kindle and the Sony Reader 700. Although both devices are considered e-book readers, they could also be considered mini-computers as well, given the features they possess.
-
Amazon Kindle
-
The Amazon Kindle is an e-book device made by Amazon.com. The Kindle is a reader that relies primarily on Amazon.com's bookstore and allows access to almost any book that Amazon.com sells. In addition, the Kindle also offers access to several newspapers and magazines, such as The New York Times and The Economist. Lastly, the Kindle uses a 3G connection powered by Sprint to connect it to Amazon's bookstore for free.
The Sony Reader
-
Sony's Reader 700 offers features that are different from the Amazon Kindle. Unlike the Kindle, the Reader boasts an actual touch screen for people to use when flipping pages around on their e-books. It also allows for books in PDF and books that aren't under the protection of Digital Rights Management to read as well. The Reader also has a built-in backlight for reading in dark areas.

Pros and Cons of the Kindle
-
The feature that is arguably the Kindle's strongest point is its access to wireless Internet for free. Because of the deal worked with Sprint, Kindle users can access Amazon's bookstore, use Wikipedia and even do some Internet browsing at no cost to them. However, users have complained about the layout of the controls and that the Kindle can only take files from Amazon's proprietary file type.
Pros and Cons of the Sony Reader
-
The Reader has demonstratively much high power then the Kindle. It can read several file types other then Sony's own files and has an actual touch screen and backlight. The only disadvantage going for the Reader is that it doesn't have the wireless capabilities of the Kindle, meaning that users have to connect to a PC to download files.
Conclusions
-
If you just want an e-book reader that can also surf the net and download books, your best bet is the Amazon Kindle. The access to the Wikipedia and Internet can help in a situation. If you just want to read e-books, then purchase the Sony Reader, which has more features pertaining to reading anywhere. It may also be interesting to note that Sony is looking into wireless capabilities for its reader as well, and should it get them, Amazon's Kindle could be in some hot water.
