Operating systems generally run background processes and services to enable or enhance a program’s core functionality. Apple’s multimedia application QuickTime for Windows operates in a similar fashion through the use of the Qttask.exe system process. Qttask.exe is responsible for running the QuickTime system tray icon.
Qttask.exe provides a shortcut to various QuickTime-related settings and preferences through its system tray icon. These include options to register the program, optimize audio-based preferences, toggle automatic updates, among other related functions. In essence, the process’ system tray icon provides instant access to QuickTime’s core settings due to its friendly accessibility.
Although Qttask.exe is not known for excessive CPU consumption, you may wish to disable it to free up additional memory. Right-click its system tray icon, followed by “QuickTime Preferences.” Click the “Advanced” tab and uncheck the “Install QuickTime Icon in System Tray” option. Click “OK” to apply all changes.
