Wii Facts

The Nintendo Wii is a seventh-generation gaming console, and the latest offering from Nintendo. The Wii has many defining characteristics. From its unique name to the wireless Wii Remote, there is nothing ordinary about this gaming console. Nintendo Wii sales have been very high, and it would seem that this game system has carved out a strong niche for itself.

  1. Name

    • Marketing experts at Nintendo crafted the name of this gaming console very carefully. The name "Wii" is spelled with two lowercase "I" characters. This is intended to invoke imagery of two people standing next to one another. In addition, the name of this game system is pronounced like the English word "we." This also suggests a group or community approach to the game system.

    Sales

    • Within 30 months of its launch, nearly 24.5 million game systems were sold in the United States, with worldwide sales surpassing 52 million. Sales of the gaming console have been higher than both of its major competitors, the Microsoft Xbox 360 and the Sony PlayStation 3. These figures are significant, because the Wii has been the first Nintendo console since the Super Nintendo Entertainment System to lead the market.

    Technical Specifications

    • The Nintendo Wii utilizes a number of technological advances in its architecture. The CPU inside the gaming system is a PowerPC-based "Broadway" processor. The video processor is made by graphics leader ATI. This gaming console uses 88 MB of GDDR3 SDRAM and features 3 MB of memory just for the graphics processor. It has no hard drive, but relies on a 512 MB flash memory, as well as expandable storage in the form of SD cards.

    Features

    • Its features are a good part of the reason the Nintendo Wii is so popular today. The revolutionary wireless Wii Remote provides users a new degree of freedom of movement. Its three-dimensional sensing technology means controlling the Nintendo Wii is unlike any other gaming system. The Nintendo Wii also features Wi-Fi connectivity, giving you Internet access through your home's wireless Internet router. The WiiConnect24 technology provides constant, real-time system updates, even when your gaming console is turned off.

    Game Library

    • While some of the Wii gaming system's critics complain about a lack of titles, the Nintendo Wii has a deep library. Some of the most popular titles for this gaming system are "Wii Sports," "Wii Play," "Wii Fit," "Mario Kart Wii," "Super Smash Bros. Brawl," "The Legend of Zelda: Twilight Princess" and the "Guitar Hero" series of games.
