How Much Caffeine Is in Instant Coffee?
Instant coffee is an alternative to traditional brewed coffee that requires only hot water and instant granules. The mix is made by removing the water from brewed coffee, forming concentrated instant powder. The amount of caffeine in instant coffee depends on the amount of mix you use, but it is generally less than traditional coffee and more comparable to black tea or soft drinks.

Caffeine Content
-
Because instant coffee is not brewed, the caffeine content depends completely on the quantity of instant granules you use. An 8-ounce cup typically contains between 65mg and 100mg of caffeine, but if you use significantly more or less mix, the caffeine content will vary accordingly.
Caffeine in Other Drinks
-
Traditional coffee typically contains more caffeine than instant. Eight ounces of brewed coffee has between 80mg and 135mg. Drip coffee has even more caffeine, between 115mg and 175mg per 8-ounce cup. Espresso contains about 100mg of caffeine per 2-ounce shot, and a cup of black tea has about 60mg. A can of Coca-Cola Classic contains 34mg of caffeine, Mountain Dew has 55mg and a can of Red Bull has 80mg.

Recommended Daily Intake
-
Caffeine has been widely studied and is considered a safe substance by the USDA and other health authorities. In general, the maximum amount of caffeine you should consume in a day is 600mg, which would mean six to eight cups of instant coffee. If you are pregnant or breastfeeding, reduce your caffeine intake. Experts recommend no more than 150mg to 300mg per day.
Effects
-
Most people are aware that caffeine increases alertness and wakefulness, but if you overdo it, caffeine can be harmful. Exceeding the recommended daily limit can cause insomnia, nervousness, restlessness, irritability, nausea or gastrointestinal problems, fast or irregular heartbeat, muscle tremors, headaches and anxiety. Heavy consumption of caffeine during pregnancy has also been shown to increase the likelihood of miscarriage and low birth weight.
Benefits
-
Several studies have suggested that regularly drinking coffee can have a positive impact on your health. Researchers at Harvard University found that regularly drinking coffee can reduce your risk of diabetes, and other studies have shown a reduced risk of Parkinson's disease for habitual coffee drinkers. Caffeine also helps treat asthma and headaches, and may have a positive impact on athletic endurance. While consuming more caffeine may have its benefits, it's still a good idea to keep your daily intake under 600mg to avoid the negative side effects of over-consumption.
