A perennial plant, turmeric derived from the rhizomes of Curcuma longa, which is a member of the ginger family (Zingiberaceae). The active ingredient of turmeric is curcumin. The spice has a distinct flavor that is earthy, slightly bitter and slightly hot.
To make the ground powder turmeric commonly used in cooking, the rhizomes are boiled, dried and ground.
Turmeric is native to tropical South Asia and can be found in the forests of Malaysia. The plant needs warm temperatures and considerable rainfall to thrive.

Turmeric can be used raw (similar to ginger) or as ground powder spice in cooking. It is the key ingredient for many Indian, Southeast Asian and Middle Eastern cuisines.
In many areas of the world, turmeric is used in cooking as a pigment, adding a custard-like yellow color in canned beverages, baked products and dairy products. Turmeric is mostly used in savory dishes but also can be tasted in sweet dishes.

It is being studied in clinical trials in the United States for possible benefits in Alzheimer's disease, cancer, arthritis and liver disorders.

Turmeric has many non-culinary uses. It can be used to deter ants in gardening, is an ingredient in a radiator stop-leak sealant mixture and some sunscreens, and is used ceremonially in many rituals in India, such as wedding ceremonies and purification rites.

Ground turmeric is available in the spice aisle of most grocery stores, as well as in ethnic and specialty stores. In addition, it is sold as a dietary supplement in capsule or liquid extract forms. As a dietary supplement, it is not regulated by the Food and Drug Administration.
