Social Etiquette Courses for Teenagers

Because teenagers might not realize the ways in which poor manners can create a negative impression, it is up to parents and teachers to ensure that teens learn the value of social etiquette. For those who have not learned such skills at home, social etiquette courses are an excellent resource that can ultimately help youths improve their quality of life.

  1. Learning Etiquette at Home

    • A teenager's likelihood of having good manners outside of the home is a direct reflection of the way etiquette was taught in the home. Ideally, parents model proper behavior such as greeting elders, saying please and thank you, and respecting the belongings of others. If parents have reinforced such behavior for many years and gave children opportunities to practice social etiquette at family dinners and gatherings, they are more likely to act properly in public as teenagers. Although it is more difficult to learn later on, teenagers can certainly pick up these skills and make them a part of their daily lives.

    The Importance of Etiquette Courses

    • For many teenagers, etiquette is not learned at home. For some, social etiquette courses are their only opportunity to develop such crucial skills. Sigmund Freud once defined mental health as the ability to work and love. Without proper manners and personal skills, teenagers are unlikely to build rewarding careers and healthy, romantic relationships. Social etiquette classes foster a positive attitude and respect of the self and others that is essential for living a healthful, productive life.

    Social Etiquette Courses for Teens

    • The average social etiquette course takes place in a relaxed setting with a diverse group of teenagers. The courses often focus on encouraging students to develop their communication skills in a variety of contexts and become aware of the messages they send in their body language. Teenagers learn the importance of proper posture, grooming and speech. There is often a lesson on dining and having poise in various social situations.

    Social Etiquette in Business

    • Many social etiquette courses are designed for young professionals looking to gain an edge in the business world. Classes build confidence and offer advice in terms of making first impressions, succeeding at interviews and following up with new contacts. They teach skills for handling all types of correspondence, from communicating properly on the phone to writing effective emails and letters. In addition, such classes can teach teenagers how to network at events and entertain for business.

    Finding Etiquette Courses

    • Many communities, organizations and schools throughout the nation offer courses in social etiquette. It is always wise to ask friends and co-workers for referrals and research the classes properly to find the class most suitable for you or your teen. An Internet search can bring up many locations where social etiquette courses are offered. Some classes are even taught online. Books and articles on social etiquette might also have recommendations for social etiquette courses.
