Bulging eye disease is also known as Graves' disease and occurs due to high levels of a thyroid hormone in the body. The disease causes swelled and disfigured eyes, blurry vision, and, in some cases, blindness.
Symptoms

Signs of bulging eye disease include swelling of the fat and tissue located behind the eyes. This will cause pain, discomfort, and redness. In addition, as the swelling builds, the eye will enlarge and bulge out of the socket. In some cases, mostly severe ones, double vision can occur.

Causes

Bulging eye disease is caused by a high level of the hormone Thyroxin when it is overproduced in the body. The disease is essentially thyroid disease of the eye. The University of Rochester Eye Institute describes it as, "An inflammatory process associated with the disease induces structural cells behind the eye called fibroblasts to make too much connective tissue protein. The fibroblasts also convert into fat-like cells." The institute explains that when this happens the eye swells and pushes out of the socket.

The largest problem resulting from bulging eye disease is a lack of lubrication of the eye. Since the eye can not close properly and re lubricate itself, those suffering from it must use eye drops (such as artificial tears or clear eyes) to keep the eye from drying out. When the case is severe a doctor may provide prescription medication or radioactive iodine to lessen the hormone production.
There is no cure for bulging eye disease but researchers continue to work to find a cure or therapy regimen. Currently, for severe cases, cosmetic surgery is used to help with eye function and appearance.

As with any condition caused by thyroid issues, risk for the disease can be decreased by eating healthy, sleeping well, and regular exercise. This will help maintain a healthy thyroid gland.
