Personality tests are designed to assess psychological traits in a person's behavior and predict how a person would normally react or process information based on assigning a personality type. The assumption is that certain psychological traits remain consistent over time. Personality tests can provide a look at an individual's personal and emotional development.

  1. What is Myers Briggs?

    • Myers Briggs Type Indicator® (MBTI) is a personality test based on psychological types developed by Isabel Briggs Myers and Katharine Briggs in the 1940s. The concept is adapted from the psychological theories of Carl G. Jung and introduced in the 1920s.

Sixteen personality types exist in the MBTI. The types are determined by a combination of the following traits with a corresponding letter in each category:

Introversion (I) or Extraversion (E): Focuses on internal or external personality
Sensing (S) or Intuition (N): Focuses on how information is interpreted
Thinking (T) or Feeling (F): Focuses on how decisions are made either through logic or evaluating people and circumstances
Judging (J) or Perceiving (P): Focuses on the external decision making process and openness to new information

Based on a series of questions, an appropriate letter from each category is assigned as a component of the personality type.

    What is ISFJ?

    • ISFJ stands for introversion, sensing, feeling, judging. It is also know as the custodian personality type. This personality type is structured and practical, and needs regular feedback and progress updates.

    Learning style

    • ISFJ personality types learn in a systematic and focused manner. ISFJs prefer information to be factual and reference to actual situations that the knowledge can be applied. Ways to engage an ISFJ are interactive training methods, lectures and presentations.

An ISFJ learns by experience and memorization, and relates to learning situations that match the ISFJ's interests and values. This personality types needs clear goals and expectations and needs to be rewarded or appreciated for accomplishments.

    Barriers to learning

    • ISFJ personality types do not learn as well when not allowed to process information fully, asked to be too detail-oriented or given too many alternatives. ISFJs are least effective in situations that involve large amounts of data and when the time table for completion of a task has not been set by the ISFJ but by another party.

    Considerations

    • Personality tests are effective only when the individual taking the test answers questions truthfully. Outcomes can be manipulated by the test taker.

According to the Society of Human Resource Management, 40 percent of Fortune 100 employers utilize a form of personality and psychological tests during the hiring process. Personality testing that reveals mental or health issues can be considered illegal under the American With Disabilities Act, so employers must use caution when administering personality tests as a condition of employment or promotion.
