You can create a luxurious retreat in your attic bathroom with a coat or two of paint and a few basic accessories. Paint the walls a light color, bring in lamps and splurge on a heated towel rack. Small attic bathrooms will appear larger if you cut down on the clutter. Add shelving and scones on the wall to free up space for an open feel.

    Paint and Wallpaper

  1. Pick a pale paint. Pale blues and creams will open up your attic bathroom and create a cottage feel. If you want to use dark colors, consider painting just one wall. This will keep the space open while bringing in color.

For a bolder look, install wallpaper on the upper half the the walls and wainscoting on the bottom half. Wallpaper in pale paisley and light stripes will create a visually appealing design without overpowering the room.
  2. Windows

  3. Keep windows free of heavy treatments, especially if the attic bathroom is small. Add sheer curtains for privacy while opening up the space.

Add windows or a skylight to increase the light in a dark attic bathroom. If you are on a tight budget, paint a window mural on the wall to trick your eye and make the room feel larger.
  4. Flooring

  5. Flooring should be light and easy to maintain. Cork, which is durable and long-lasting, stays cool in the cool in the summer and warm in the winter.

Slate and stone floors, which are usually pale gray or blue, harmonize with light walls and are easy to clean. They are also resistant to mildew and mold, two common problems in attics.
  6. Accessories

  7. Install corner cabinets to provide extra storage.

Hang mirrors to create the look of a larger space and to reflect sunlight if you have small windows. Mirrors can open up the room without breaking your budget.

If the attic does not have ceiling lighting, use lamps on the vanity. This will create a warm glow at night and help brighten the space.
  8. Considerations

  9. When painting an attic bathroom, use paint that is mildew- and mold-resistant. Attics typically don't have a lot of air circulation, so always use no-VOC or low-VOC (volatile organic compound) paint. The strong fumes of some paints might make the attic unusable until the fumes have dissipated.
