What Apple Trees Will Pollinate a Fuji Apple Tree?

With crisp, white flesh and a sweet, slightly tart flavor, Fuji apples are very popular. Fuji apples, as with most varieties of apple trees, are not self-fruiting. This means that the blossoms must be cross-pollinated with another variety of apple to set fruit. Many apple varieties can serve to pollinate Fuji apples. Because Fujis bloom mid to late season, it is a good idea to plant early, mid, and late season apples that will bracket the blooming season of Fuji apple trees.

Honeycrisp

According to the University of Missouri Extension, Honeycrisps are among the earliest of apples to flower and are right in the middle of their bloom when Fujis are just beginning. The fruit is large and yellow, with red mottling, a mild, sweet flavor and crisp texture.

Empire

A cross between Red Delicious and McIntosh, Empire apples have creamy white flesh and a sweet-tart taste. Empires are a good all-purpose apple. Like Honeycrisps, they bloom early.

Jonagold

Jonagold apples are a cross between Jonathan and Golden Delicious apples. With a firm flesh and well balanced taste, Jonagolds can be used for fresh eating and cooking. This mid-season apple can be planted with Fuji apple trees.

Red Delicious

The Apple Guide from the U.S. Apple Association states that Red Delicious apples have been around since the 1870s. Having elongated fruit with a classic apple form, Red Delicious are better suited for fresh eating out-of-hand, than baking or cooking as they tend to break down under heat. Blossoms for Red Delicious open just a few weeks before Fujis.

Gala

Another mid-season apple, Galas are popular for fresh eating. They have heart-shaped fruit with yellow and orange skin. These apples act as a good for companion tree for Fuji pollination.

Granny Smith

Granny Smiths also make a good mid to late season choice for pollinating Fujis. An old standard, especially for baking, Granny Smith apples are tart and firm, with little juice. They hold up well under temperature changes.

Braeburn

Braeburn apples have a good balance of sweetness and tartness. An excellent snack apple, they can also be used baking and cooking. Braeburns parallel the Fuji bloom time, and are available to pollinate Fujis the whole time Fuji apple trees are flowering.

Rome

The University of Missouri's apple bloom period chart indicates that Rome apples are among the latest apples to bloom and can cover the close of the Fuji apple blossom season. Romes are sweet and only slightly juicy. They have a mild flavor which deepens when they are cooked or baked.
