Problems with Downloading Music

Problems with downloading music are as diverse as the various ways to download. Each particular download method has its own particular difficulties than can show up when you're trying to download. There are also problems with downloading music from the Internet in general as well. It's a good idea to be careful about certain downloading dangers.

  1. Firewall

    • One problem you could have when downloading files, especially in a P2P program like Limewire, is your system firewall. Your firewall may be preventing your programs from downloading files from the Internet. In Windows, you can check this by first hitting the 'Start" menu. Click on "Control Panel" next. You can click on "Windows Firewall" from there. The "Exceptions" tab in the Firewall window will list all of the programs that your firewall allows past it. if you don't see your program there with a check mark next to its name, you can add it to the list with the "Add Programs" button.

    Torrents

    • If you're trying to download a song from a torrent search site and it's not working, it could be because you don't have a torrent program. You'll know this because when you try to download your music file, you get a "torrent" instead. it will just download to your desktop or downloads folder, and you won't be able to do anything with it. In order to fix this, you can download a torrent program. An example is UTorrent. Download and install this program fist, and then you'll be able to open your torrent file and get the music you want.

    Other User

    • When you're trying to get music from another user on a website like Limewire, sometimes the problem with the download will be that the user you're downloading the music from went offline, or doesn't have a fast enough connection for you to get the music from them in a timely manner. Try a different user with the same song if the one you're trying to download doesn't work. There will usually be plenty of people who all have the same song as the one you want. Find a song that has multiple users offering the same exact version in order to get the best chances of getting the song quickly.

    DRM

    • Some music you download will have DRM software, which stands for Digital Rights Management. This software will prevent you from copying or fully using a particular song. This is because the song is copyrighted, and illegal to download. There really isn't much you can do about this, except for buy the song from a website such as iTunes. Here, you can buy the song you want directly from the website after downloading and installing the program. The download should be fast, and the songs are usually pretty cheap individually, averaging around a dollar each as of 2009.

    Other Considerations

    • Another problem you could have with downloading music include files that are mislabeled. Any free music that comes from a program like Limewire or a torrent can have music files that have a different label than the proper one for the song. This is just one of the problems that can happen online. Some files can actually be dangerous to download as well, and can cause issues. Make sure when you download music, that the file you're getting is actually a music file like MP3. If it's a program file like EXE that claims to be music, it could be a virus instead.
