Four Herbs That Ease the Symptoms of Menopause

Menopause is the time in a woman's life when the reproductive cycle changes and menstruation ends. Natural menopause usually begins between ages 45 and 55. Menopause may occur gradually or may be more sudden. Every woman experiences it differently, though common symptoms include irregular periods, hot flashes, night sweats, mood swings, fatigue, vaginal dryness, weight gain and dizziness. A number of herbal remedies can alleviate symptoms of menopause.

  1. Black Cohosh

    • Black cohosh (Cimicifuga racemosa) is a perennial herb found in eastern United States. Native Americans have used the herb for centuries to treat a number of ailments from snake bites to indigestion. These days black cohosh is used mainly as a therapeutic supplement for symptoms of menopause. The part of the plant used is the dried root, which is available in tablet form from health stores. The suggested dose is 20 mg twice each day. Though it is not clear exactly how black cohosh works, it does seem to be effective at reducing a number of menopause symptoms including night sweats, hot flushes, vaginal dryness and bloating.

    Dong Quai

    • Dong quai (Angelica sinensis) is sometimes referred to as "the female ginseng." It is a perennial plant native to China and has been used in Chinese medicine for centuries as a tonic and for treatments relating to the female reproductive system. It has been shown to have anti-inflammatory and antispasmodic properties, which means it reduces inflammation and the effects of cramping. It may also help reduce menopause symptoms such as night sweats and hot flushes. It is often combined with black cohosh. It is available in tablet form, and the suggested dose is 400 to 600 mg each day.

    Red Clover

    • Red clover (Trifolium pratense) is a perennial clover that grows in Europe, Asia and Africa and has been introduced to North America. Historically it has been used to treat cancer symptoms as well as bronchitis and other respiratory symptoms. These days red clover is used as a therapeutic supplement to treat symptoms of menopause such as hot flashes and night sweats. It may also help to reduce the risk of osteoporosis (brittle bones). The suggested dose of red clover is 400 to 500 mg daily.

    Evening Primrose

    • Evening primrose is a perennial flowering plant native to North and South America. It has become a popular herb for the treatment of many menopause symptoms including bloating, breast tenderness, vaginal dryness, hot flashes, mood swings and night sweats. The suggested dose is 500 mg each day. It usually takes 4 to 6 weeks for noticeable effects.

    Warnings

    • The possible side effects of black cohosh include nausea, breast tenderness, vertigo, weight gain and headaches. Dong Quai may cause negative reactions in some people particularly at high doses. These include skin inflammation and increased sensitivity to sunlight. Possible side effects of red clover include nausea and headache. Although uncommon, some side effects that have been reported with evening primrose use include nausea, breast tenderness and headache. If you experience any of these side effects, you should stop taking the supplements immediately and consult your physician.
